Basic Collection Development Skills
  This presentation provides an introduction to collection development and management and is intended for individuals new to the responsibilities in collection development and management. It will review the elements in collection development policies; explain the importance of collection analysis and the basics of collection management.

Beyond the Newsletter: Social Media Solutions for Library News
  A demonstration of the use of popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs to promote your library’s news. Overcome the challenges of managing multiple accounts by automating the process with strategic use of tools like RSS2Twitter, Social RSS and Flock. A look at how the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Libraries generates a news and events stream with automatic cross‐posting to social networking sites. A discussion of broader implications (e.g. staff time and resources) for libraries engaging in social networking.

Between The Covers of Library Partnerships
  Is your current ILS giving you gray hair? Learn how two library groups in Manitoba have decreased their ILS problems by working together. Join a panel discussion by Mary Toma, head librarian, South Central Regional Library, and David Christensen, Technical Consultant, Public Library Services about Manitoba’s Evergreen project (SPRUCE). Vickie Short, librarian Lac Du Bonnet, and Ken Kuryliw, librarian, Red River North, will discuss the consortium they formed to bulk purchase new library software and the technical set up with the databases housed at Red River North library.

  Looking for a quick and fun way to select new and upcoming local titles? We’ve put local publishers on the clock to pitch their best titles. Guaranteed not to lag, the fast pace will provide loads of laughs and plenty of practical information about books of all genres. Hosted by the effervescent Winnipeg International Writers Festival artistic director Charlene Diehl. A listing of the session’s titles and hand‐outs with information will be given ahead of time, so sit back and enjoy.

Making the best use of your EBSCO databases
  Anne will discuss a variety of topics pertaining to EBSCO databases, including:
  • New features in the EBSCOhost and NoveList platforms
  • Advanced topics such as setting up Alerts to proactively send email containing links to articles from the latest issue of a patron’s favourite magazine
  • Tips and resources for promoting the databases and getting additional help

Library Advocacy Now!
  Library Advocacy Now! is a highly–rated interactive training program for anyone who cares about libraries. The goal of the program is to encourage trustees, Friends, librarians, library users and others to speak out for libraries; to understand and work more collaboratively with politicians and other decision-makers and to lobby more effectively in the constantly-changing political environment.

Learn how to become a better advocate by altering how we craft and deliver our messages to those who make decisions about us. Library Advocacy Now! is a combination of information sharing, storytelling and participation in training exercises. An extensive workbook is provided at the workshop and other resources are provided. The workshop is inspiring, invigorating, thought-provoking and fun!

Designing Dazzling Displays: Tips and Tricks
  Jennifer McSweeney is the artist behind the simple, yet eye‐catching book displays at McNally Robinson Booksellers. Dawn Huck, of local publisher Heartland Associates, sets up displays within minutes at local conferences and events that are the envy of many. How do they do it? With a few basic design techniques, and materials found all around you, you will be shown how to create simple, yet dazzling displays. Using some basic building blocks, and a list of dos and don’ts you will be shown the secret to success. The session will end with a fun contest to compete for prizes.

  This session will explore the most recent developments in the area of Canadian e‐books, and will show not only what is available from major e‐book vendors but also what is made available through provincial library associations.

Kiosks: A Balancing Act
  Kiosks have evolved from simply online public access catalogue terminals to dynamic in‐library portals to the expanding range of online services and collections. The trick is to find the balance between quick access to the catalogue and broad access to all that other good stuff.

In 2009 the Thunder Bay Public Library conducted a Service Audit on its kiosks. This session will outline the steps in the audit, share the findings and recommendations, and engage the audience with a concluding brainstorming exercise on potential future directions.

Working Alone: What You Need To Know
  This session will discuss the responsibilities employers have with regards to working alone, as well as, the responsibilities of employees. A careful look at the legislation will identify the regulatory responsibilities of each affected group and a thorough description of policy and program development will provide clear insight to workplace requirements. This hands-on workshop will also teach participants how to identify and control hazards specific to their workplace while focusing on violence, harassment, and working alone.
