Librarians and trustees are invited to attend this full-day preconference workshop on public library governance including grant eligibility and the Public Library Act. Participants will review their roles and responsibilities, and learn more about collection development and e-resources. PLSB staff will provide an overview of resources and services they offer.

Please register for this session using the preconference registration form. Limited to 15 participants.

Cataloguing with RDA
  RDA is the new cataloguing standard that replaces AACR2. Metadata created according RDA instructions supports improved resource discovery in the web environment. This full-day session will feature modules developed by the Pan-Canadian Working Group on Cataloguing with RDA. Learn to record attributes of manifestations, items, works and expressions; learn to create or use authority data by recording attributes of persons, families, corporate bodies and places; and learn to identify and record relationships. The workshop will focus on using RDA in a MARC 21 environment, and will include time for discussions, questions and exercises.

The New Standard on Web Accessibility, WCAG 2.0: Easy Steps for Including Your Entire Audience
  De-mystify accessibility standards! Most adults suffer from some level of disability or difficulty that can be mitigated through accessible Web site design. When we design for the extremes, everyone benefits. Whether you are new to accessibility and WCAG, or already familiar with WCAG 1.0, by using the immediately-applicable tips and techniques you’ll learn in this powerful accessibility course, not only will you comply with the standards you’ll be broadening the audience for your Web site while enriching the experience of all your visitors.

What You will Learn:
  • why accessibility matters to everyone
  • the major disabilities and challenges
  • assistive technologies we can typically use to mitigate these issues
  • examples of accessible multimedia
  • how accessibility will help your bottom-line
  • overview of regulations
  • W3C WCAG 2.0 checkpoints
  • current standards and guidelines
  • specific technologies and design techniques used to satisfy accessibility concerns
  • testing frameworks for accessibility issues
  • specific techniques to save money through accessible coding
At the end of this event, you will:
  • know many techniques you can apply right away to make Web content more accessible
  • have a comprehensive understanding of W3C WCAG 2.0
  • be able to make informed decisions as to what degree to comply with accessibility standards
  • understand better the experience of those with disabilities using the Web, multimedia, and software apps
  • know you’re doing the “right thing” by ensuring accessibility for all

Factors in Board Effectiveness
  This workshop will provide an overview of the key factors that contribute to board effectiveness and provide opportunities for participants to identify structures and processes that are working well for them and trade ideas on ways to meet shared challenges.

Topics will include:
  • Clarity about the board’s key functions – setting direction through strategic planning and maintaining control through monitoring and reporting
  • The importance of a strategic focus – mission, vision, priorities
  • Beyond financial accountability – the board’s role in achieving financial sustainability
  • Board orientation, education and ongoing development
  • Board assessment and action – collectively and individually
  • Board culture and communication
  • A model for board effectiveness
  • Resources to support trustees and library boards

Hal Loewen, Librarian at the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Libraries, took part in Cyc4Lib 2011: Copenhagen-Berlin, a library unconference. Hal will introduce the documentary, talk about this experience, and guide a bike ride to the King’s Head Pub (biking optional!).
