How Much is This Donation Worth?

1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Libraries and Archives regularly receive donations of books, magazines or journals and are often asked to value the donations, for tax receipt purposes. Some items are family treasures and may have greater value than one might first assume. In this workshop, librarians/archivists representing public and academic libraries and archives, together with a well-known book dealer, will examine a sample of the kinds of items that often are offered as donations (including some rare books) and will discuss the procedures that they would follow to assess the value of these items. Each workshop participant will receive a copy of the list of items that are being discussed and will be invited to share his/her thoughts on the value of these items and on the validity of different procedures for valuing donations.

Speakers: Local book dealer Burton Lysecki, as well as Linwood DeLong (University of Winnipeg), Tannis Gretzinger (Winnipeg Public Library), and Diane Haglund (United Church Archives).
Registration Fee: $30.00 (see online registration form)
Included: Coffee break
